15 of My Favorite Things About Spiritual Freedom

15 of My Favorite Things About Spiritual Freedom

In America, we’re gearing up for the fourth of July to remember and celebrate liberty as a country. But sometimes we take our spiritual freedom for granted.

So when I read a letter John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, about Independence Day in 1776, I found this interesting.

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” (Wikipedia, emphasis added)

Like Adams, many of our founding fathers looked to God for “the day of deliverance.” Likewise, we looked to God for our day of deliverance—our spiritual freedom.

My day of deliverance happened at sixteen-years-old; the Lord delivered me from sin and spiritual death giving me eternal life—something worth remembering and celebrating.

Accepting grace became my first act of devotion to God Almighty.

So let’s look at 15 of my favorite ways we are free in Christ.

Spiritual Freedom in Christ

(1.) Jesus frees us from spiritual captivity. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” Isaiah 61:1 (NIV)

(2.) Real freedom comes when the Son sets us free. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (ESV)

(3.) True freedom means nothing masters us. (see 1 Corinthians 6:12)

(4.) Seeking God’s precepts helps us walk in freedom. “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” Psalm 119:45 (NIV)

(5.) Called to freedom to love and serve. “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love, serve one another.” Galatians 5:13 (NASB)

Freedom For Holiness

15 of My Favorite Things About Spiritual Freedom

(6.) Free from slavery to the flesh. “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

(7.) Freedom for holiness and everlasting life. “But now you are free from the power of sin and are slaves of God, and his benefits to you include holiness and everlasting life.” Romans 6:22 (TLB)

(8.) Christ sets us free from the power of sin. “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.” Romans 6:6-7 (NLT)

(9.) To live free as servants of God. “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.” 1 Peter 2:16 (ESV)

(10.) Free from condemnation. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2 (ESV)

Spiritual Freedom in Truth

(11.) Freedom in the Spirit. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 (ESV)

(12.) Free from death. “With eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.” Romans 8:20b-21 (NLT)

(13.) Truth brings freedom. “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32b (ESV)

(14.) Freedom in doing God’s perfect law. “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” James 1:25 (NIV)

(15.) Freedom has a name, Jesus. Jesus’ blood spilled on Calvary’s cross to set real freedom in motion. But it never stopped at the cross. Jesus rose from the dead securing our spiritual freedom for all time.

Our true freedom resides in Jesus alone, Karen, you are so right! I hope all of us keep that fact in mind as we honor our country and its founding on July 4.
Blessings!

Karen says:

“Jesus alone” is the key phrase here, Martha. “With eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.” Romans 8:20b-21 (NLT)

Our spiritual freedom extends from the time we believe in Christ as our Savior clear on into eternity. It isn’t over at death, rather it goes onward on the unimaginable timeline of eternity. While here on this earth, our freedom and grace in Christ expands as our lives are devoted more and more to Christ. Our freedom in Christ gives us hope, keeps us walking forward, and gives us freedom to be who God has made us to be. This is a great list of realities that you’ve compiled here, Karen! So much encouragement in one blog!

Karen says:

“While here on this earth, our freedom and grace in Christ expands as our lives are devoted more and more to Christ.” So beautifully said, Melinda. “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” Psalm 119:45 (NIV)

Rebecca Payne says:

I love this post. We do take our spiritual freedom for granted.

Karen says:

Thank you, Rebecca. I pray to remember spiritual freedom not only this time of year, but all year long.

Love how you applied freedom to specific areas.
If we’re not spiritually free, then we’re not free at all!

Karen says:

So true, Ava. Thanks for that beautiful reminder. Real freedom comes when the Son sets us free.

J.D. Wininger says:

I so often find myself going back to read Galatians 5 during this holiday. May we all learn to live in liberty and spiritual freedom that Christ-only can provide.

Karen says:

Galatians 5, and the entire book, is one of my favorites. Freedom must be maintained so we don’t revert back into bondage.

Nancy Head says:

So sad that the world believes there is no freedom in Christ. Thanks for encouraging us, Karen. Happy Fourth. God bless!

Karen says:

Nancy, they are certianly blind to the truth of real freedom. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 (ESV)

Jessica Brodie says:

I love this and have truly found such tremendous liberation in Jesus. We are a free country, yes, but no earthly freedom compares to the freedom of soul we have in Christ.

Karen says:

Amen to this, Jessica, “no earthly freedom compares to the freedom of soul we have in Christ.” “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32b (ESV)

Karen says:

Thanks for commenting, Kristi Ann. God bless you! Freedom has a name, Jesus. Jesus’ blood spilled on Calvary’s cross to set real freedom in motion. But it never stopped at the cross. Jesus rose from the dead securing our spiritual freedom for all time.

Donna says:

Fabulous thoughts on freedom, Karen-and not all ones we normally think of! For instance freedom from slavery, we take for granted we are free in this country, and even freedom from death- thank you for these great reminders of the tremendous freedom Christ purchased for us!

Karen says:

Glad this spoke to you, Donna. This time of year has me thinking about freedom in country and Christ. Thankful!

PaulaShort says:

Amen, to living as free servants of God.

Karen says:

Yes, Paula, we are truly free in Christ!

Joanne Viola says:

Karen, the John Adams quote is one to give much thought. May we remember our day of deliverance – the day the Lord saved us and continues to bring salvation every day. I am so glad you shared the post here!
