10 Wonderful Attributes to Describe Jesus

10 Wonderful Attributes to Describe Jesus

What are your favorite ways to describe Jesus?

I remember the first time I heard the name, Jesus, as a child. There is something about that name…about Him.

Since Christ brings us compelling qualities of life when we know Him as Savior and Lord, these central attributes also describe Jesus.

(1.) We describe Jesus as love.

True Love defined means, Jesus. Our lack of love from people never makes the Love of Christ less true.

Instead, we are loved the way He says we are loved: Love lays down His life for me (John 15:13); perfect Love drives out my fear (1 John 4:18-19), and He redeems my life from the pit and crowns me with Love (Psalm 103:4).

(2.) Jesus is mercy.

God sent Mercy from the throne room of heaven to take our place. Beaten, bruised, and pierced with nails, Mercy’s blood spilled on a cross. And Mercy bestowed forgiveness on us to cover our sins.

“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:5 (ESV)

(3.) Peace describes Jesus.

Peace means the absence of war and conflict and a state of rest. Perhaps we hear Christ referred to as the Prince of Peace.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NIV

The Bible Knowledge Commentary notes this is the first of Isaiah’s 25 references to peace. The Messiah would bring and maintain peace and “will have an eternal rule of peace” that never ends. This biblical Peace is the Messiah Himself. He rules and reigns in our hearts as Peace.

(4.) Hope has a name, Jesus.

The world offers many forms of hope. Yet, they fizzle and fade away. But, God made big plans to bring Hope to a hopeless people. Hope’s birth took place in a lowly stable. Hope grew and carried out the heavenly Father’s will—even death on a cross.

Hallelujah! Hopeless never gets the last word. Hope rose from the dead when Jesus Christ conquered the grave.

(5.) We describe Jesus as grace.

I read this verse: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV

Then, the Lord whispered to my heart: Karen, Grace is the greatest gift, a good and perfect gift (James 1:17) that came down from Me to you as my Son.

God extended amazing Grace to us at such a high price, His only Son.

(6.) Jesus is truth.

When we search for Truth, we find it in Christ.

And the gospel of John sheds some light. The Word was in the beginning (John 1:1); the Word became flesh, full of Truth (John 1:I4); Truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17), and Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6).

(7.) We describe Jesus as freedom.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor, He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” Isaiah 61:1 NIV

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 ESV

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV

(8.) Kindness equals Jesus.

God’s Kindness is eternal and abundant Life. And God’s Kindness is Jesus, the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us. Ephesians 2:6b (ESV)

So when others see a kind smile or a random act of kindness. Or, they notice generosity and compassion in us, they see Kindness—Jesus in us!

(9.) We describe Jesus as joy.

Consider Jesus’ story. The wise men, “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Matthew 2:10 ESV (emphasis added)

Angels proclaimed to the shepherds, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10b ESV (emphasis added)

Women who visited the empty tomb. “So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.” Matthew 28:1, 8 ESV (emphasis added)

Great. Joy. Is. Jesus.

(10.) Jesus is called victory.

Christ defeated death and the grave. He put the enemy under His feet. And He conquered sin. Christ fights our present battles as Victor in our spiritual warfare. Victory is His name.

Do you remember the first time you heard the name, Jesus? He's also known as love, hope, mercy, peace, victory, and more. #Jesus Share on X

I don’t think I could choose any one attribute, Karen. Jesus is, and always will be, all these things and more!
Blessings!

Karen says:

He really is our everything…hope, love, mercy, peace, freedom, victory…the list is abundant. God bless!

Lynn says:

All the attributes of Jesus are equal, of course! But describing Jesus as freedom speaks to me the most today. He sets our hearts and minds free, no matter if our circumstances seem dark. He illuminates the light, and shows us the way to go. And in that, there is the hope that is Jesus, too!

Karen says:

Lynn, freedom is such an important part of who we are in Christ. May we never get over how He set us free through His precious blood. And He continues to offer freedom if we just accept it.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV

Yvonne Morgan says:

What an extension and thorough list Karen. All these attributes lead to more blessings for us. Thank you for sharing them.

Karen says:

Appreciate your comment, Yvonne. There is something about that name…about Him.

Melissa Henderson says:

I pray I show the love of Jesus always. 🙂

Karen says:

It’s a great and honorable prayer, for people to see Jesus and these characteristics in us!

Sandra Arbeni says:

All of the attributes mentioned are incredible.
I do know that despite what I’ve been going through, Jesus has filled me with joy. And because of His healing power, has restored my marriage. It’s sort of like a boomerang effect.

Karen says:

Sandra, I like how you described it as a boomerang effect. That’s good. All these wonderful attributes of Jesus will fill us up and spill over onto others and our relationships (if we let them.) Thanks for sharing part of your story here, powerful!

Nancy E Head says:

Wonderful encouragement here, Karen. Thanks and God bless!

Karen says:

Hey Nancy, thank you. Grateful for who Jesus is to us! God bless!

Donna says:

Karen such an uplifting post, how I rejoiced to read once again these beautiful attributes of our Savior!!

Karen says:

Glad this encouraged you, Donna. And always appreciate your thoughts. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV Thankful for the gift of Jesus.

Jessica Brodie says:

Such encouragement throughout this beautiful piece, Karen. Thank you! So grateful for our savior who is all of these things and more.

Karen says:

Thank you, Jessica. Jesus really is our all in all and our everything! Praise His matcheless name forever!

Paula Short says:

So beautifully spoken Karen, and so encouraging.
Visiting today from G&T

Karen says:

Thanks for visiting, Paula. Even better than the first time I heard the name Jesus, is the fact of how much more His name means to me today. He keeps growing sweeter and sweeter. God bless.

J.D. Wininger says:

Apologies for being “late to the party” Ms. Karen, but thank you for the post ma’am. As I read, I asked myself, “Do people see Jesus in me?” Sadly, my answer was, “Sometimes.” The sadness comes not from realizing I am yet far from perfect, but from my acknowledgment that God is not a “sometimes” God and we are to be righteous as He is righteous. Your post reminds me that the goal of our sanctification is to become like Christ, not to become Christ. I can accept that I’ll never be perfect until this life is over. My challenge to myself is to become more like Him with each passing day. Thank you for this convicting, yet encouraging, post ma’am.

Karen says:

J.D. May we pray for others to see Jesus in us more and more often as God transforms us through the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ. So thankful God is not a “sometimes”, but rather an “always.” Great. Joy. Is. Jesus.

Joanne Viola says:

Karen, I have now read this post several times 🙂 Every attribute of Jesus is meaningful and precious to me. He is this and so much more. Beautiful and encouraging post!

Karen says:

Joanne, I’m so thankful for all that Jesus is and continues to be to us. I want His abundant mercy, love, peace, victory, hope and truth in my life. God bless!

Karen, this was a balm to my soul. I have always loved meditating on the Names and character of God. The descriptions of Jesus draw us near His heart, for no one loves us more. Each attribute is something our souls long for. Oh, how I love Jesus!

Karen says:

I love Jesus, Melissa. These attributes do and should draw us closer to Him. Great insight. God extended amazing Grace to us at such a high price, His only Son.

Michele Morin says:

I love that Jesus embodies the fruit of the Spirit. Such a great topic for meditation.

Karen says:

Michele, He does and even more! Appreciate your comment.
