15 Scriptures to Pray Over Family and Ourselves

Try this at home. Here’s one feat I encourage every believer to try; insert the names of loved ones and your name into Scriptures.

Then, pray the Bible verses and see what happens.

Oh, I get excited thinking about what God’s up to; how He’s working behind the scenes.

But there’s working power we unleash in prayer when we speak truth and life from God’s Word.

Recently, I shared The Prayer I Prayed Over 5000 Times. It’s my story of when I met Christ at sixteen and started praying for my dad, an atheist.

Prayers for him to believe in the heavenly Father. And God answered my prayers sixteen years later when my dad gave his life to the Lord.

The Power of Praying Scriptures

Still, I struggled to believe my dad would ever become a Christ-follower.

Needing help with my own unbelief, I inserted my dad’s name into salvation Scriptures I prayed back to God. And loud enough for the enemy to know I was serious.

I believe it played a part in my dad’s salvation.

Also, praying the Bible acquaints us with the Scriptures, hides it in our hearts and reminds us of God’s promises.

I’m sharing 15 Scriptures I’ve personalized and prayed for family members or for myself. However, keep in mind the wealth of Bible topics available at our disposal.

Examples include: salvation, freedom from something, addictions, fear, healing, spiritual growth, strength, faith, trust, love, forgiveness, bondage, sin, wisdom, wayward souls, children and depression.

Simply research Bible verses that address your needs or those of family members.

The Name Above All Names

Write the Bible verses with names on a notecard, sticky note, in a journal, or type out and save where you will see them. It serves as a reminder to pray and also builds our faith.

My list gives you some ideas. The important message remains.

Prayer changes things and people. So pray with intention, specifics, God’s Word, and with names. Call out names to the Name above all names.

I have been praying for our neighborhood. I pray as I walk through the neighborhood, asking God to place His hedge of protection over each person.

Karen says:

Love prayer walks, Melissa. Thanks for sharing!

Karen, these are amazing verses to use in prayer for others and ourselves. I’m going to copy them and put them in my prayer journal to use every day when I pray for friends and family. Thank you, my friend, and many blessings!

Karen says:

I pray many of these and others, Martha! Glad you found them useful! Malachi 4:2, But for Martha who reveres my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. She shall go out leaping like a calf from the stall.

Cathy Baker says:

I love this idea, Karen! I’m getting ready to start prayer journals for all my grands and had planned to insert their names. Now you’ve given me specific verses to start. Blessings!

Karen says:

That’s wonderful, Cathy! This will pair nicely with the journal! Ephesians 3:20, Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all Cathy asks or thinks, according to the power at work within her.

Yvonne Morgan says:

I had heard this idea before but seeing the sample verses with blanks really made it hit home. This is a wonderful resource and one I plan to use often. Thanks so much for sharing these.

Karen says:

You’re welcome, Yvonne. Zechariah 4:6, This is the word of the Lord to Yvonne: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

Mandy Farmer says:

Pinned.

Oh yes! Prayer changes things. Sharing this post

Great, Susan. Proverbs 2:6, For the Lord gives Susan wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Valerie Caraotta says:

This is an excellent comprehensive prayer point emphasis that covers a good range of needed topics. Kudos for your diligent gathering of Scriptures for us!😀❤️🙏🙏🙌

Karen says:

Valerie, thank you for reading and commenting. 1 Corinthians 1:9, God is faithful, by whom Valerie was called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ her Lord.

Kristi Ann says:

Wonderful Holy Bible Verses, thanks so much for sharing them Sister in Jesus-Yeshua Christ-Messiah Karen!

God Bless Ye ALL through HIS SON Jesus-Yeshua Christ-Messiah HE LOVES YE ALL!!

Love Always and Shalom, YSIC \o/

Kristi Ann

Karen says:

Thanks, Kristi Ann. God bless you. 1 John 3:1, See what kind of love the Father has given to Kristi Ann, that she should be called a child of God; and so Kristi Ann is.

These were a powerful tool I learned when young, too. Thank you for sharing these prayer powerhouses with yet another generation. They not only teach us to pray the Scriptures, but they allow us to bring loved ones before the throne of grace with Biblical accuracy and powerful wording, prayers authored by the Holy Spirit himself! Your testimony of 5,000 prayers on behalf of your father makes this even more powerful, for you undertook this as a young woman and your father did indeed become a believer. Thanks be to God! How blessed we are to be allowed to enter his throne of grace through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Karen says:

Glad this has been a practice of yours, too, Melinda. Love how you said, “They not only teach us to pray the Scriptures, but they allow us to bring loved ones before the throne of grace with Biblical accuracy and powerful wording, prayers authored by the Holy Spirit himself!”

Psalm 90:14, Satisfy Melinda in the morning with your steadfast love, that she may rejoice and be glad all her days.

Dear Karen, this is a wonderful list of Scriptures to pray. I also like to pray The Prayer to the Ephesians (Ephesians 3:14-21) over me and the people on my prayer list.

Blessings ~ Wendy Mac

Karen says:

Wendy, I love praying that prayer from Ephesians 4 too! Isaiah 26:3, You keep Wendy in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because she trusts in you.

I love how this idea of praying scripture personal Ms. Karen. I’ve long used scripture in my prayers as a way of reminding myself of what God’s word promises (like I need to show God I’ve read His word; He knows :-), but I still do it). This idea takes it to the next level. Love it ma’am.

Karen says:

J.D., it really helps us hide God’s Word in our heart! Micah 6:8, He has shown J.D. what is good. And what does the Lord require of him? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with his God.

Love, love, love the practice of personalizing Scripture verses!
Thank you for making it even easier by providing these actual verses with the blanks built in!

Karen says:

2 Chronicles 16:9, For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to Ava when her heart is completely His.

Jessica Brodie says:

I’ve never actually done this, but I will! Thank you for the suggestion. I do believe it will be powerful.

Karen says:

It really changed my prayer life. Ephesians 3:20, Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all Jessica asks or thinks, according to the power at work within her.

Karen,
What excellent scriptures to pray inserting names of those we love and care about! I especially like the idea of praying them outloud since the enemy cannot read our minds, but he can hear us calling upon the name of Jesus as we intercede for others. As I read over the scriptures, names came readily to mind and I inserted them – great time of prayer.
Blessings,
Bev xx

Karen says:

Bev, it’s a practice I love to do. There’s just something about personalizing Scripture with our name or the names of our loved ones.

Zechariah 4:6, This is the word of the Lord to Bev: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

These prayers are beautiful! I want to print them out and use them to pray over loved ones. Much appreciated!

Karen says:

Glad this inspired you, Candice. I will email you a PDF I made of the verses another commenter asked for.

June Foster says:

This was such excellent material to use during prayer time or any time, really. Thanks.

Karen says:

True, June. Thanks for commenting.

1 John 3:1, See what kind of love the Father has given to June, that she should be called a child of God; and so June is.

I love all these scriptures. Thank you for putting them in one place to reference!

Karen says:

Your welcome, Adrienne. Psalm 32:7, You are a hiding place for Adrienne; you preserve her from trouble; you surround her with shouts of deliverance.

These are wonderful scriptures to pray, Karen. I remember praying scripture for my Uncle. He was an unbeliever and when he came into my life, I prayed for him for nine years. My kids and I would pray scripture for him. After the second heart attack, he gave his life to Christ and was changed forever. He passed away a few years ago and is now present with the Lord; I’m so glad I never gave up praying for him. I have always believed that when we pray scripture we are praying God’s will for our lives and the lives of others.

Karen says:

That’s a powerful story of prayer, Marcie. Thanks for sharing it. I agree how praying the Holy Scriptures is opening up God’s will and Kingdom on this earth! Psalm 32:7, You are a hiding place for Marcie; you preserve her from trouble; you surround her with shouts of deliverance.

Beth says:

This is such an important, powerful and meaningful exercise, Karen! And I’m so glad you’re sharing about it! My husband and I met to pray with each of the men and their wives on the executive team of our church. With hand-picked Scriptures, we inserted their names as we prayed over them. Doing it this way blessed them so much. They felt God’s love touching them in such a personal and tangible way by simply making it a plea to God on their behalves. I’ll be pinning this for sure!

Karen says:

What a wonderful way to exercise praying the Scriptures, Beth. I’m sure it was a moving experience for those couples. Thanks for sharing! There’s working power we unleash in prayer when we speak truth and life from God’s Word.

Yvonne Chase says:

Praying scriptures and inserting names is a powerful practice. I’ve done it using my name and now with your example, I will do so and include the names of others. And yes, this is a great way to hide the word in our hearts.

Karen says:

It truly is a great way to know God’s Word.

Here’s a new one, not on my list:

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant Yvonne to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in her inner being, so that Christ may dwell in her heart through faith—that Yvonne, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that Yvonne may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19
