A Christmas Series: The Gift of Grace

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17, NIV)

Christmas is only days away. And even though this marks the end of our series, I pray all 3 gifts (forgiveness, encouragement, and grace) continue to impact our lives in Christ.

I chose gifts money cannot buy, yet are very valuable. In fact, these gifts are priceless. Also, I spent time asking the Lord which gifts to highlight.

But this week, instead of waiting on God, I began researching an entirely different gift. Because I felt grace is widely discussed and covered.

Then, the Lord captured my attention when He whispered to my heart:

Karen, grace is the greatest gift, a good and perfect gift (James 1:17) that came down from Me to you as my Son the first Christmas.

Grace Defined

(1.) Google defines grace as “courteous goodwill.” So I find it interesting how grace plays a major role in the Christmas story along with goodwill (desire to do good to others, act of kindness, charitable gift).

An angel announced the Savior’s birth to shepherds, “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” (Luke 2:13-14, NKJV, emphasis mine)

The Savior embodies God’s grace and desire to do good to us and offer us kindness. And Jesus Christ remains the greatest act of charity (spiritually needy) known to mankind.

(2.) Grace in Christianity is “the love and mercy given to us by God because God desires us to have it, not necessarily because of anything we have done to earn it…the favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God.”

(3.) Maybe you’ve heard it defined as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. When we think about the love and mercy and favor underserved by us, yet freely given to us through Christ, we see grace as the most wonderful gift ever given.

(4.) Grace came in the form of a baby in Bethlehem. Grace grew into a man who spoke about God’s Kingdom and performed miracles. And Grace died on Calvary’s cross, rose from the dead, and now sits at the right hand of the Father. Read my blog article, The First Breath of Grace.

Grace Extended

Because God extended, and continues to extend grace to us, we extend it to each other.

(1.) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (John 1:16)

(2.) “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

(3.) “And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33) “And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many…followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.” (Acts 13:43)

(4.) “To love God is to cooperate with His grace. And since I’m so very aware of my own need for grace, I must be willing to freely give it away.” (Lysa Terkeurst)

(5.) “Grace releases and affirms. It doesn’t smother. Grace values the dignity of individuals. It doesn’t destroy. Grace supports and encourages. It isn’t jealous or suspicious.” (Charles Swindoll)

Amazing Grace

God extended amazing grace to us at such a high price…His Son.

(1.) “Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound) That sav’d a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.” (John Newton)

(2.) “Grace is not simply leniency when we have sinned. Grace is the enabling gift of God not to sin. And grace is power, not just pardon.” (John Piper)

(3.) “Grace needs to be the air we breathe, the atmosphere we live in, whether in church or in the home.” (Allen Snapp)

(4.) “We are born broken. We live mending. The grace of God is the glue.” (Eugene O’Neill)

Just like our first 2 gifts, forgiveness and encouragement, grace is the gift that keeps on giving.

When we reflect on all we know about grace, we conclude it’s a great gift to receive and give. While it may not be under our tree, we choose to wrap it in love and humbly offer it this Christmas and year-round.

Merry Christmas! No blog post next week, see you January 2, 2020.

Grace is one of my favorite words (and one of my top choices for the name of a future daughter one day!). My Bible’s concordance defines it as a free gift we don’t deserve, the power of Christ in us to live with strength for today and hope for eternity. I love that. I love knowing God doesn’t just give us His righteousness (which would be more than enough!), but He also gives us strength to live out our days here on Earth and hope for an eternity spent with Him!

Karen says:

Emily, I love that name for a girl. And like your concordnace definition, too. Along with you, I’m thankful the Lord continues to give us grace to live out our days here. “Grace needs to be the air we breathe, the atmosphere we live in, whether in church or in the home.” (Allen Snapp)

Julie says:

We need to remember this all the time!

Karen says:

Thanks, Julie. When we reflect on all we know about grace, we conclude it’s a great gift to receive and give. While it may not be under our tree, we choose to wrap it in love and humbly offer it this Christmas and year-round.

“Grace.” An often misunderstood word indeed. Great job of helping define it Ms. Karen. For me, grace is “something not deserved a gift that can’t be repaid with material things, but with actions.” I’ve often used this example to help young Christians understand the difference between mercy and grace. “Mercy is when you get a speeding ticket and the judge suspends your sentence. Grace is when he gives you a new car in addition to suspending your sentence.” Well said ma’am. God’s blessings; and thank you so much for this wonderful series of posts. Merry CHRISTmas Friday Family!

Karen says:

Love your thoughts on grace, J.D. And how you explain the difference between mercy and grace.

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” (Luke 2:13-14, NKJV)

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Jann says:

God’s Grace is amazing. It’s hard to comprehend, but something we have to have. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Karen says:

Agree, Jann. Hard to wrap our heads and heart around grace. Yet, we know it’s the most wonderful gift we’ve ever received! Merry Christmas!

I am thankful for the grace God provides to each of us. Merry Christmas!

Karen says:

Me too, Melissa. God extended amazing grace to us at such a high price…His Son. Merry Christmas!

Laurie says:

What wonderful thoughts on grace, a concept I think about often. We do nothing to earn it, but it comes to us anyway.

Karen says:

Yes, Laurie. So powerful! Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17, NIV)

Mandy Farmer says:

I needed a LOVE button for this one. Oh the grace of God! It is certainly the best gift of Christmas. pinned, shared, tweeted.

Merry Christmas!

Karen says:

Awe, thank you, Mandy, for your comment and sharing. The Savior embodies God’s grace and desire to do good to us and offer us kindness. And Jesus Christ remains the greatest act of charity (spiritually needy) known to mankind. It really is God’s riches at Christ’s expense! Hallelujah. Merry Christmas!

Karen, this has been a beautiful Christmas series! I have loved the whole idea of spiritual gifts and have been blessed to read each post, one by one. Grace. Such a profound gift. Something undeserved. Over and above. I have a friend who always reminds me of God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense. I have inserted my name in scripture verses, as you did in James 1:17, but I appreciated seeing that once more. An important remembrance that God’s Word is for all and for me. Just like His grace. May your Christmas overflow with grace and goodwill!

Karen says:

Melissa, appreciate your kind words. Grace is a profound gift and no other gift outdoes, outshines, or outlasts the gift of grace. When Jesus took His first breath, it was the first breath of grace. So thankful He brought grace to us through His birth, death, and resurrection. When we think about the love and mercy and favor underserved by us, yet freely given to us through Christ, we see grace as the most wonderful gift ever given. Merry Christmas!

I love the quotes and passages. I’ve been struggling with gratitude and burn- out; this goes perfectly with the blog I just read on gratitude: Even if I have nothing else, I have the gift of his grace. A definition from one of my first pastors: Grace is when we get what we don’t deserve and don’t get what we deserve. Thanks, Karen!

Karen says:

Hey Candice, I like your pastor’s quote on grace. True and powerful! Grace is salvation in a nutshell as one commenter on social media put it, and it continues to keep is in Christ.

FIONA TALBOT says:

Beautiful gift – Grace!
thank you for its reminder!

Karen says:

Yes it is, Fiona. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Yvonne Morgan says:

Grace is a beautiful thing and your blog helps demonstrate that to us. It is truly amazing to ponder the grace we are given. Thanks for sharing your encouragement.

Karen says:

Yvonne, thank you. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (John 1:16)

What a glorious exposition of “grace”! Can we ever have too much on this topic? No! You shared so many quotes and examples that we, the readers, are truly blessed by the encouragement of the reality of God’s grace. I resonate so much with this brother’s words: “We are born broken. We live mending. The grace of God is the glue.” (Eugene O’Neill) Amen to that! Thank you for sharing these thoughts on grace as we enter this blessed holy week of remembrance of Christ’s incarnation!

Karen says:

I love that quote also, Melinda. When I think about this passage: “And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33) “And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many…followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.” (Acts 13:43) I pray we all continue in the grace of God! Merry Christmas!

Great post Sister, truly thankful for His Love and Grace. God Bless You and Yours!!

Karen says:

Thank you, Stephen. Because God extended, and continues to extend grace to us, I pray we extend it to each other.

Grace is one of my favorite words. I can not imagine a world without grace. God’s grace. Our grace to others. Their grace to us.

Karen says:

Mine too, Theresa. So thankful Grace came in the form of a baby in Bethlehem. Grace grew into a man who spoke about God’s Kingdom and performed miracles. And Grace died on Calvary’s cross, rose from the dead, and now sits at the right hand of the Father.

Beckie says:

What a gift this post is, Karen!
Love all the grace quotes and passages.
Amen and amen!
Merry Christmas 🎄

Karen says:

Thank you, Beckie. Grace has a name. It’s Jesus! Merry Christmas!

Grace is such a beautiful gift. One so precious to me that I named my daughter after it! We don’t deserve it, could never work hard enough to earn it. Grace is not our wages paid for doing God’s work, but the free gift by which we can come to God at all. Great post Karen!

Karen says:

Jennifer, like how you said, “Grace is not our wages paid for doing God’s work, but the free gift by which we can come to God at all.” Amen! Thanks for your comment!

Barb Ready says:

“Karen, grace is the greatest gift, a good and perfect gift (James 1:17) that came down from Me to you as my Son the first Christmas.” Yes! 💯

Karen says:

Barb, that thought really grabbed my attention and would not let go…glad grace never lets go of us either!

Pam Morrison says:

(4.) “We are born broken. We live mending. The grace of God is the glue.” (Eugene O’Neill)
Love this line!!

Karen says:

I know, Pam. Such a powerful thought about grace. Merry Christmas!

Jessica Brodie says:

I agree completely. Grace is a never-ending gift!

Karen says:

Through the fullness of Jesus, we have received grace upon grace. John 1:16

Amen! God brought heaven to us!

Carol Round says:

Grace…Oh, His Amazing Grace. I love this: “When we reflect on all we know about grace, we conclude it’s a great gift to receive and give. While it may not be under our tree, we choose to wrap it in love and humbly offer it this Christmas and year-round.”

The best gift we can give another!

Thanks, Karen, for this look at grace!

Karen says:

It really is the best gift we receive and give, Carol. So thankful grace and truth came that first Christmas through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)
