Finding Comfort in the Names of God
Our community is blessed this week with guest blogger, Mandy Farmer. She’s a woman of God who I’ve had the joy to interact with online. Do you need comfort in pain? Maybe you’re familiar with physical or emotional pain or both. In this post, Mandy not only reminds us who God is, but also how the names of God bring us comfort.

We have all experienced pain in one form or another. There are moments of pain in my life where I still cringe when I think about it—stepping on a nail in my bare feet. Eek! That one hurt just typing it right now.
I’m approaching nine years of chronic pain. It never gets easier. But there are other types of pain that may hurt even more deeply, crushing our heart and soul. Truly, the one thing I have found for all my pain is focusing on Christ.
I recently thought about the many names of God. Have you ever wondered, “Why so many names?”
I have come to realize that it is to show us God is whatever we need Him to be whenever we need it. In different times of our lives, we need God to show Himself to us in different ways. It is at these times that we may find comfort in a new Name of God at just the right time and in just the right way.

Abba Father and Jesus, Lover of my Soul
In my elementary years, I was the short fat girl who no one wanted to choose for their team. My earthly father, proved to me through example that I had my Abba Father who loved me, called me His own, and chose me to be His Child.
Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT
Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord cares for me. Psalm 27:9-10 NLT
My Creator, Rock, Refuge, Deliverer
In my teen years, when I struggled so much with self-esteem, He gave me value when few others did. He kept me safe when I was treated unfairly; and a place to hide when I could not defend myself from abuses.
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10 NLT
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 18:2 NLT
My Friend, my Helper
In early adulthood, I was far from home. I still struggled with my own value, but God was steadfast. He taught me from trial to trial and grace upon grace. He kept me stable as my Sure Foundation. When I was not sure that life was worth the trouble, He became my Source of Life.
In that day he will be your sure foundation, providing a rich store of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the Lord will be your treasure. Isaiah 33:6 NLT
All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. John 1:3-4 AMP
My Overcomer
As a new mother and pastor’s wife, He became my Overcomer as I learned new and sometimes hard lessons. He was my Refiner when I realized that I needed to change my attitude or improve my actions.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT
I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. Zechariah 13:9 NLT
The God Who Sees Me
When my husband was betrayed by the church and we were turned away, we found Him to be our Promise Keeper, our Joy, our Protector, our Provider. Though we felt the crush of lies from the very mouths who had earlier encouraged us and testified to how well we were doing, our Lord took care of us.
Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me? Genesis 16:13 NLT
Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. John 16:24b NLT
The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:7-8 NLT
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NLT
Friend,
No matter what pain you may be feeling today, I urge you to seek Him in your pain because He can be found just as He promised. He truly does hold us in the palm of His hands. In fact, our name is inscribed there, and we are safe! (Isaiah 49:15-16)

Yes, I find comfort in saying His name. In good times and in bad times, I call out to Him. He brings comfort. 🙂
Love this post (perhaps even more so since I wrote a one-year devotional on the names of God!)
I found great comfort in your words here today, Mandy – you are a blessing! Thank you, Karen, for sharing Mandy’s inspiration with us today. 🙂
This is a very encouraging post! A few years ago, our family went through the hardest trial in our life. I studied the names of God, in a book by Kay Arthur. Learning His different names during that time was exactly what I needed. Then, my chronic illness became worse and I cling to His beautiful names, very often. He is my Jehovah Rapha-the God who heals, He is my Jehovah Nissi-Lord my banner, He goes before me into any hard thing I face. He is absolutely the Great I Am!
Mandy, thank you for sharing your testimony. I share a couple of autoimmune diseases with you, so I can definitely relate to the chronic nature of pain and the restrictions it can bring to life. I’m so sorry you have suffered so much. We have, too, decades of trials. My husband is a board member of an international ministry founded by Christians Indians in India. Ministry puts us in Satan’s bullseye, I believe. However, I’ve found God in his Trinitarian representation meeting us wherever we are: Jesus as Advocate, Prototokos — Firstborn from among the Dead, Firstborn over all Creation, Holy Spirit as Comforter, and God himself as the Father who didn’t fail us. Protector, Lover of our souls, Our Triune God blesses us in so many ways, and your words are a reminder that his many names and attributes meet us in our need, no matter what! God bless you, sister!
Melissa, Yes. I am constantly calling out His name!
Ava, how awesome that you have written a devotional on these. I wrote a 30 day devotional on perseverance, at this point offered free by email. It nearly stumped me to do 30-days but it was a challenge the Lord put before me. So I “persevered”
Martha, so glad I could be a comfort to you today.
April, I am familiar with difficulties as well, I was given Anne Graham Lotz’ book “Wounded by the Church” which comforted me through the study of the God Who See Me
Melinda, God has been so faithful. I have never doubted His care in my life.
I love the names of God showing me different aspects of his holy being. Thank you, Mandy, for such a great reminder of who he is through each name. God bless!
Thank you, Nancy. I was excited to share this today. May God bless you.
I knew some of this, Mandy, but not all of it. God is so faithful to manifest different aspects of His character through His names–just when we need that aspect.
I have a friend who struggles with chronic fibromyalgia pain; will share this blog with her. Thank you for sharing how God has met and sustained you through your pain! In my emotional pain, jehovah jireh, my provider, has shown up with everything I need!
Very comforting Scriptures in times of uncertainty and when the trials and pain goes deep. So much it seems we learn from God during the hardest times we face. I wish you comfort Mandy from the pain you face. Thanks for the comforting words we can glean from.
Hi Love this article and the different aspects of God’s character that we can learn through His different names – Elohim, Creator God is my inspiration. Thank you 🙂
I find so much comfort in these names. God provides for us. Thanks for sharing
I love how God has many names, each a reflection of his nature. And how while there are so many names we can call him, he remains constant and faithful.
God is so kind to meet all of our needs.
What a wonderful concept; one I never really thought about before. God’s names enable us to relate to what our situation needs in the moment. I think I like that idea. 🙂 He is all these things and more; He is God, the Lord of all creation. Knowing that whatever pain I may be experiencing (health, grief, etc.), He is there to apply His soothing balm of grace to my life. Comforting thoughts indeed. Thank you ma’am; and thank you Ms. Karen for introducing us to this dear sister in Christ (followed on Twitter). God’s blessings ladies.
I love the thought that Jesus is so many things to us, especially what we need in every moment of our lives. Thank you for that. Also, I’m sorry to hear about the experience your husband and you had with the lies from church members, but I’m glad to hear that you leaned on Jesus as your promise keeper, protector, provider, and joy.
Such a great post! I love knowing God is God, and the name God represents is whomever we need Him.. because God is ALL things and can do all things.
Mandy, such a moving post! Thank you, Karen, for sharing this with us. I have always loved the names of God and they help me to connect with God in the ways in which I need Him. The real life examples are ones we can all relate to, in one way or another. Being excluded, low self-esteem, betrayal by other Christians. Thank you for sharing these openly and honestly, yet with grace under God’s care. Everything the enemy meant for evil, God can use for good. Remembering His names, helps us remember all the ways He can be our all in all.
Stephen, God has been more than faithful to us. In many ways, these events brought new blessings. Thank you for your kind words.
J.D., He has been my everything. Thank you for your lovely comments
Lauren, God is more than kind. I don’t deserve His great love.
Anne, He is definitely constant and faithful. He never changes!
Yvonne, So glad that my words have comforted you today.
Sharon, El Ohim, my creator. He made me, He loves me, He provided my needs!
Valerie, It’s in the darkest times that God is the nearest, we just may not realize it until looking book. (Like the poem, Footprints in the Sand)
Candice, thank you for passing my words along. I pray they can comfort many.
Barbara, I find His grace shows up just at the right time! He is faithful.
This is beautiful, Mandy! I love how you apply the names of God through the different stages of life. I love studying the names of God and have also found great comfort in Who He is
Valerie, I so agree with you. The more I study about God the more in awe I am
God’s name is above all name. The names are the description of His character. He honor His word above His name and His words are tied to His name. That God for who He is and His superior character. I have expeienced Him through His name and He never cease to do wonders. Lovely writing and the ways you experience Him. I know what it is to face rejection and see the unrighteous being accepted. iT was like away with Jesus and give us Barabas the thief. I have experienced deliverance when God open my eyes spiritually to see what would have destroyed me. When that happen God was the one who get me out of the way(it is deeper than what is written here) God bless you as you continue to write.
What an encouragement this post was for me! Thank you! God’s many names are powerful! Something I like to do is to pray his names over situations in my life. Doing so brings me peace and confidence amidst the storms of life that rage.
Maurice,
It is true. It goes much deeper than what I have written. I too, have had God open my eyes to what He was protecting me from. I praise Him often for that protection. (unanswered prayers that are better unanswered)
Yes, Marcie, it does help to call Him out by His name that depicts what you need. It is more of a reminder to myself than to Him that He will provide the right answer.
