Giving Thanks for Every Spiritual Blessing

Giving Thanks for Every Spiritual Blessing

It’s that time of year when we focus on giving thanks.

Likewise, we’ve heard it said to count our blessings.

But if we look at the shocking amount of blessings God extends to us, they are hard to number.

Maybe you give thanks for family, friends, shelter, provision, and health.

Still, God has promised us every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus.

Perhaps our hearts need reminding of these spiritual blessings from God’s Word.

Giving Thanks to Our Generous God

In Paul’s letter to the Church at Ephesus, he first greets the saints who were faithful, then he continues:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us IN Christ with EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:3 (ESV, emphasis added)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us IN Christ with EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:3 (ESV, emphasis added) #givethanks Share on X

First, Paul calls God “blessed.” We bless Him as our Father.

But I find it interesting how we bless God, then go on to state the reason is none other than the fact He has blessed us. And not only blessed, but in Christ, we’re blessed with every spiritual blessing.

If we draw out the forms of the word “bless” to summarize, here’s what it says in a nutshell.

Blessed be God, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

Wow! It should really motivate us in giving thanks to a good and generous God.

Giving Thanks for Spiritual Blessings

The letter to the church at Ephesus goes on to remind us of the many spiritual blessings in chapter 1:

Chosen by God– “Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” (v. 4)

Loved and adopted by the heavenly Father– “In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” (v.5)

Riches of grace lavished on us, redeemed through Jesus’ blood, forgiven of trespasses and spiritual wisdom and revelation– “To the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us.” (vv. 6-8)

Insight to know God’s will, plan and purpose for life– “Making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ.” (v.9)

Spiritual inheritance– “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.” (v.11)

Hope in Christ– “So that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.” (v.12)

Word of truth, gospel of our salvation, and sealed with the Holy Spirit– “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” (v.13)

"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit." Ephesians 1:13 ESV #givethanks Share on X

Enlightened hearts– “Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” (v.18)

Greatness of God’s power– “And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places.” (vv.19-20)

Thankful to God: All Blessings Flow From Him

But Paul’s writings here aren’t exhaustive. When I reflect on “every spiritual blessing,” I think of:

God’s long-suffering toward me.

God’s acts of providence in my life.

Comfort during troubled times.

The Lord’s voice leading me.

Second, third, fourth, and countless chances for messing up.

Spiritual discipline (not pleasant, but yields a great reward).

Relationship with the Creator.

Strength for times of waiting.

Healing for physical ailments and a wounded heart.

The privilege to minister in Jesus’ name.

Ability to overcome the world.

God’s glory seen in me and my callings.

There’s more, so much more! Oh, the indescribable thanks to God from whom all blessings flow—straight into our laps and lives.

The blessings God has given us and continues to do so are boundless, Karen. We could count them to infinity and still not contain them all. I don’t think He expects us to be able to do that, but I know God wants us to be mindful of our blessings every single day. Wonderful post, my friend!

Karen says:

Martha, good insight, it’s not about counting blessings, but being mindful of how countless they really are and who and where they extend from. “Praise God from whom all blessings flow!”

Amen. Give thanks to the Father. Happy Thanksgiving!

Karen says:

Happy Thanksgiving, Melissa. Blessed be God, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

I love your observation, “I find it interesting how we bless God, then go on to state the reason is none other than the fact He has blessed us.” This reminds me of 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.”
Much to be thankful for!

Karen says:

Ava, I hadn’t made the connection between that thought and 1 John 4:19, but that’s true. The Lord always goes first in choosing us, loving us, blessing us, and so much more.

Yvonne Morgan says:

Great message Karen. I pray I can always be thankful in all circumstances.

Karen says:

Thanks, Yvonne, me too! “So that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:12 (ESV)

JD Wininger says:

Amen Ms. Karen. We often take for granted all that God blesses us with each day. I love your “attitude of gratitude” ma’am. God’s blessings, and Happy Thanksgiving every day ma’am.

Karen says:

Thank you, J.D. Happy Thanksgiving and Thanks-living. “Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” Ephesians 1:18 (ESV)

Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for helping to prepare our hearts. God bless!

Karen says:

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Nancy. “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 1:13 (ESV)

Jo Davis says:

You are so right! God’s blessings in our lives are too numerous to count! I do my best, but I’m sure I’ve “missed” some along the way. However, I try to keep an attitude of thanks in my heart!

Blessings, Jo

Karen says:

I’m with you, Jo, it’s great to have the reminder and hopefully it last all year–an atttitude of gratitude.

Mary Jane Lines says:

Great article an message Karen. You are so right, we have so many things to thank God for each and every day. So many I can’t count them and thank him for his multitude of daily blessings. We need to be reminded sometimes when we are having down times. Thank you for sharing your many blessings in Jeausus holy and precious name with all of us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your famialy. I know me and my family are blessed each and every day unconditionally by his love. God bless you and yours!!

Karen says:

Hi Mary Jane, your comment is so encouraging and your thankful heart definitely shines through your words. I can’t see how we can not give thanks to our heavenly Father for choosing, loving and adopting us. And as if that wasn’t enough, He gives us blessing upon blessing in so many ways! God bless and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

How blessed we are to know that whatever we NEED will be provided for us by the Savior! And, if it is not needed, we need not fret or worry over its provision for the Lord will provide and take care of all our needs.

Karen says:

So true, Melinda. Thanks for that clarity on what’s important. Surely every spiritual blessing is something to give thanks for all year long! Oh, the indescribable thanks to God from whom all blessings flow—straight into our laps and lives.

Jessica Brodie says:

We are incredibly blessed by God. You are absolutely right! May we always remember in every inch of our being.

Karen says:

Yes! “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us IN Christ with EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 1:3 (ESV, emphasis added)

Karen! It’s so good to be here today! Your words never fail to bless me and inspire me, and this was no exception! Thank you for this admonition to give thanks for every spiritual blessing! I loved connecting with you here today! It had been way too long!

Karen says:

Hey Stacey, I loved having you stop by and visit and it has been a long time since I’ve visited your site. Thank you, I pray to stay more intentional to give thanks for every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places!

Such an amazing list of spiritual blessings, Karen. I’ve often paused over this verse and wondered about the blessings and you’ve gathered several in one post!

Thanks for linking up at Grace and Truth!

Peace and grace,
Tammy

Karen says:

Hi Tammy, thanks for visiting and commenting. I’m sure we can’t comprehend all that this verse means, but at least the chapter gives us some assurances of many of these spiritual blessings.

Carol says:

A wonderful list of God’s blessings! In my current study of Revelation I see God’s desire for us. The seven churches are given instructions, encouragement and promises. We are so blessed to have God’s word!

Karen says:

Hey Carol, that’s a good point. We are blessed with God’s Word that describe all the blessings made available to us in Christ.

Joanne Viola says:

When we pause and think long and hard on the blessings God has blessed us with, the list truly cannot be exhausted. May our hearts be filled with gratitude today and always!

Karen says:

Exactly, Joanne. Oh, the indescribable thanks to God from whom all blessings flow—straight into our laps and lives.
