Keeping Your Eyes Wide Open for God
Keep your eyes wide open.
Maybe you keep a watchful eye on your neighbor’s house while they are out of town. Perhaps you help look for a friend’s lost pet.
Or, we watch for a specific job ad in the paper or online and ask others to keep an eye out for the position.
Yet, to keep our eyes open sometimes proves difficult. Like when we are sleep deprived. Or, during a scary movie or gruesome video.
And keeping our eyes wide open putting in eye drops. Anybody else have a hard time with this?
But to keep our spiritual eyes open often proves most difficult of all.
Similar to how we were once spiritually blind to Jesus and salvation, we also need to open our spiritual eyes to God’s presence and His work in our daily lives.

Hallelujah! Thank God! Pray to him by name! Tell everyone you meet what he has done! Sing him songs, belt out hymns, translate his wonders into music! Honor his holy name with Hallelujahs, you who seek God. Live a happy life! Keep your eyes open for God, watch for his works; be alert for signs of his presence. Remember the world of wonders he has made, his miracles…(Verses 1-5a, emphasis added).
Maybe we tell others of all the great things God has done for us. And we praise the Lord for every deed or blessing from His hand.
Yet, we miss the second vital part. We fail to look for God’s presence Sunday through Saturday, 24/7. We forget to watch for God to display His wonders in our lives today and every day.
This passage gives us insight into how to keep our spiritual eyes open.
Keep Our Eyes Wide Open for God
Not wishing to see what lay ahead, I kept my eyes closed. College friends talked me into riding a roller coaster at Disneyland. Let me be clear. I’m fearful of heights, and not a fan of going upside down or dropping off steep inclines.
Life causes twists and turns, flips our world upside down or drops us from a steep incline. Still, God is with us through it all, always along for the ride and by our side. He holds onto us as He accomplishes His purposes in everything about our life.
Because the Lord’s purposes are the God-things He has for us and our loved ones. Even the small, yet, still miraculous things happen daily. There are divine happenings we’re often unaware of that point directly back to God. There’s simply no other explanation.
Keep Eyes Wide Open for God’s Works
When my husband and I used to pick up our grandson when he was younger to spend the night, he watched from a window for us to arrive.
While he waited, he likely anticipated the adventures that awaited him at our house.
In the same way, do we watch for God to arrive at just the right moment? Or, do we anticipate what adventures await us with our heavenly Father? Also, do we watch for the Lord’s activity in our life, His wondrous works on display in our lives?
Due to God’s divine power, encore performances of His mighty works happen each day of our lives; encores of grace, peace, hope, goodness, love, and mercy.
And miracles in heavenly places. Things only God can pull off.

The shrill beeping from my iPhone startled me in the middle of the night. A flash-flood alert. (Alert: “quick to see, understand,” Cambridge English Dictionary).
Are we missing alerts from heaven? Or, are we quick to see and understand God’s presence among us?
God provides signs of how He performed a supernatural act, sent us on a divine appointment, scheduled a soul-encounter or protected us from harm with His angels.

Do you relate to any of my examples of difficulty in keeping your physical eyes open? How about your spiritual eyes?

Wonderful post Ms. Karen. Learning to use our “Spiritual eyes” give us insight into so much more of God’s presence in our lives. It’s when we can see Him in the animals, plants, and hills He created that we understand His Word about “… all of creation cries out.” Really enjoyed this post ma’am. Thank you!
That’s a beautiful way to describe it. Even spiritual hindsight is 20/20, once we get out a little way from the situation, we can always look back and see how God worked it out for our good. God bless!
A wonderful message Karen. When we keep our eyes wide open, we can see the miracles of God all around us. Thank you for the wonderful encouragement
Thank you, Yvonne. These are miracles in heavenly places. Things only God can pull off.
So good, Karen! I find spiritual sight requires intentionality. It starts as a desire to see daily circumstances differently, from God’s point of view, and then remaining alert to those things He longs to show us. Staying in step with His Spirit is an adventure and one not to be missed!
Yes, Cathy, I agree 100% about being intentional. And I like how you said we see things from God’s point of view, which is a wonderful prayer for us all. Let’s keep our eyes wide open for God! God bless, friend.
God is ever present in our lives, Karen, of that I’m convinced! We simply have to be on the lookout in our hearts and minds to see His presence in all our comings and goings, and be ready for that miracle He longs to give us.
(Is that your granddaughter in the photo? She sure is a cutie!)
Blessings to you and yours!
Hey Martha, yes, it’s my granddaughter, she’s soon to be 5 in July. Yes, we need to stay on the lookout for the Lord’s presense and works, it takes us being intentional.
May we be ever aware that God doesn’t deal in coincidence, only in Providence. Thanks, Karen. God bless!
I like this, Nancy, “God doesn’t deal in coincidence, only in Providence.” That’s a great word. I pray wekeep our spiritual eyes wide open for God, God’s works, and signs of His presence.
I just read some articles on this subject. However, I found this very interesting. Lucky Patcher
Thanks for sharing, Paula. Due to God’s divine power, encore performances of His mighty works happen each day of our lives; encores of grace, peace, hope, goodness, love, and mercy.
When we are intentional about keeping our eyes and ears open and alert for God’s messages, we can find joy and peace. Great message. 🙂
Indeed, Melissa. I pray we fail look for God’s presence Sunday through Saturday, 24/7. And we watch for God to display His wonders in our lives today and every day.
Amen to this! When we keep our eyes open for the Lord, we experience so much joy and peace and comfort.. for God is EVERYWHERE! In people, in nature, in little and big moments… it’s beautiful!
Agree, Jessica. There are divine happenings we’re often unaware of that point directly back to God. There’s simply no other explanation.
Karen, I love keeping my eyes open to the Presence of God throughout my day! I learn so much by simply keeping my mind and eyes open!
We sure do, Donna. If we only make it a habit and daily practice. God bless.
I think it is important to be intentional looking for God in every aspect of our lives. He promised to never leave or forsake us; so that means He’s everywhere, whether or not we notice!
I agree! And I like how you said God is in EVERY aspect of our lives. Thanks for sharing your insight.

Karen, your post resonated with me as I wrote about looking for God’s goodness in each day. We can so miss His presence in the beauty He places in our paths if we are not focused. May we not forget to watch for God to display His wonders in our lives today and every day. Blessings!
I read your post, Joanne. It definitely takes intentionality to watch and look. God is here working, it’s up to us not to miss it…not miss Him. Thanks for your comment.
