Our God is Good and Holy and Loving and Just

Our God is Good and Holy and Loving and Just

Do you hear people separating how God is good from His holiness? Or celebrating His love but not His justice?

During college, I worked at a jewelry store in a local mall. So I learned the cuts and facets of diamonds and other gems.

The multi-faceted parts of these stones make each one brilliant and stunning.

In the same way, our heavenly Father bears many characteristics.

But we often only focus on the feel-good parts of His character. Like how our Father is good and loving, but not how He is also holy and just.

Yet, all the attributes of the Lord working together are what make Him God. Each fascinating facet of the Almighty makes His glory brilliant and stunning.

When we practice separating His goodness from His holiness or His love from His justice, we lose the full nature of our heavenly Father.

In essence, we detach who He is from what He does. But the two are one and the same.

We often only focus on the feel-good parts of our God. Like how He is good and loving, but not how He is also holy and just. Share on X

Our God: Good and Holy

Good and loving and holy and just are not only who the Lord is, but also what He does!

Since the beginning of time, the Lord’s goodness is weaved throughout the chapters of His-story. It started with creation when He saw everything He made was good.

Goodness is seen when the Lord rescued His people. It’s revealed in Bethlehem’s stable and narrated in Jesus’ ministry. It’s told at the foot of a bloody cross and reported as a victor in an empty tomb.

Now, we see His goodness in our lives through every blessing and promise of Scripture. We are living testimonies to God’s goodness.

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!” Psalm 27:13 (ESV)

God is good and does good. (Psalm 119:68)

The Lord is Love

1 John 4:8 tells us God is love. John 3:16 states how God so loved the world, He gave His only Son. And “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Since the heavenly Father lavished His great love on us, we are called the children of God. (1 John 3:1)

Finally, Psalm 136:26 reminds us how God’s love endures forever! Maybe people stop loving us or fail to fully love us. But not God.

Our God is Good and Holy and Loving and Just

The Lord is love and loving is what He does.

God’s Holiness

“God is holy means there is no trace of evil in his character. Only God is holy.” (The Blue Letter Bible)

Exodus 15:11 reiterates it, “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” (ESV)

Since evil’s prevalent on this earth because of sin and ungodliness, the Lord’s holiness plays an integral role in who He is and what He does.

Because God is good and also holy, He saves us from our sin, sanctifies us and calls us to become a holy people. “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.” 1 Peter 1:15 (ESV)

God Is Just

We hope for justice when innocent people are affected by tragedies. Yes, we hope justice is carried out on earth by the court system. Yet, God’s court is the highest in the land.

The Almighty is not only good and loving and holy, He is also just. Justice is what God does.

If the Lord never dispensed justice, to whom or where would we turn to make things right or punish deeds done in darkness?

Look at Isaiah 30:18 “Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (NIV)

The Lord loves justice. (Isaiah 61:8)

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “The Rock! His work is perfect! For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.” (NASB)

Finally, Psalm 33:5 shows the Lord’s justice connected to His love. “The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.” (NIV)

One day God will right every wrong and do away with evil because He is just and dispenses justice.

Multi-faceted God

We do ourselves a disservice when we fail to understand all the aspects of the heavenly Father. Because a god who’s not equally holy and just, doesn’t meet the requirements for a higher power.

Instead, this god falls on the same level with false gods and mere humans.

Our God is Good and Holy and Loving and Just

But our God encompasses these characteristics and more. So let’s be thankful for the muti-faceted God we serve who is not only good but also holy.

Jessica Brodie says:

This is a great point. Loving God is a verb… not just a feeling. We can love God by loving others, by caring for others, and by trying our very best to walk in holiness and righteousness, by honoring God’s commands. Amen!

Karen says:

Great thoughts, Jessica! “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!” Psalm 27:13 (ESV)

Our Father embodies all these marvelous attributes, and we can always count on Him to be our defender, our strength, and the ultimate judge in all things. When I see the injustices in this evil world, I remember to ask God in prayer for His righteous judgment to be meted out as He sees fit. In the mean time, let us pray to be able to love others as He has commanded.
Blessings always, Karen!

Karen says:

Agree, Martha, God is God and on His throne, there is no other! Blessings!

Trudy says:

I love how you describe our multi-faceted God, Karen. How all His attributes are so intertwined in who He is. And this truth especially comforts me today – “One day God will right every wrong and do away with evil because He is just and dispenses justice.” Thank you for encouraging me today. Love and blessings to you!

Karen says:

Thanks for your comment, Trudy! I find so much comfort in knowing God will do away with evil and right every wrong. Hallelujah!

Amen. I’m thankful God is loving and just and so much more. His love covers us and provides balm to the soul. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

Karen says:

I’m grateful too, Melissa. All His wonderful attributes working together are what make Him the one true God!

Karen, this is such an important teaching! For many years, I did not understand the greatness of God’s nature, that is included in His holiness, justice, righteousness, and sovereignty. The more I understand His holiness, the more I understand the greatness of Christ’s sacrifice for me. He loves us with a pure and holy love!

Karen says:

I was the same, Melissa. As I’ve matured in my faith, I came to realize all the wonderful and powerful atttibrutes of our God and how they go hand in hand. They worked together to make Him the Almighty! God bless!

Yvonne Morgan says:

I do hear and read about lots of people only focusing on the good parts of faith while ignoring the hard parts. We do serve a multi faceted God and His beauty and grace must be observed in His entirety. Thanks Karen

Karen says:

Yvonne, I love how you said, “We do serve a multi faceted God and His beauty and grace must be observed in His entirety.” Yes! God bless!

Karen, you made some great points in your post. God is good and loving, holy and just. He gives His children fresh mercy and grace every day. We have but to go to Hiim and confess our sins and He is faithful to forgive. Yet if those who will not accept Him never repent, then they will receive God’s jsutice. Why not repent while you can?

Karen says:

Good word, Jerralea, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m so thankful the Lord’s mercy and grace is new and fresh every single day. I hope to never seperate any of God’s powerful attributes from the others. All of them working together are what make Him God! Blessings!

J.D. Wininger says:

Your post reminded me of something shared by a dear brother-in-Christ a few years ago when he and his wife were visiting our little ranch. What he shared, is something he often uses as he evangelizes the gospel of Christ. “If you refused to spend time with God in this life, why would a loving God force you to spend eternity with Him? He is a just God who will give you your heart’s desire, even if it’s eternal separation from Him in hell.”

Karen says:

Thanks for sharing your friend’s words, good message. I pray to remember all the wonderful facets of God’s character that make Him God, and no other. God bless!
