Truly Free on a Day of Deliverance
In America, we are remembering and celebrating liberty as a country. But I always like to celebrate how I’m spiritually free in Jesus Christ, too.
So when I read a letter John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, about Independence Day in 1776, I found this interesting.
“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” (Wikipedia, emphasis added)
Like Adams, many of our founding fathers looked to God for “the day of deliverance.” Likewise, we looked to God for our spiritual day of deliverance.
Jesus’ blood spilled on Calvary’s cross to set real freedom in motion. Truly a day of delieverance.
But it never stopped at the cross. Jesus rose from the dead securing our freedom for all time.
My day of deliverance happened at sixteen-years-old; the Lord delivered me from sin and spiritual death giving me eternal life—something worth remembering and celebrating. Accepting grace became my first act of devotion to God Almighty.

Therefore, here’s a list of 20 Bible verses to help us remember and celebrate.

(2.) “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, ESV)

Amen. Amen. We are blessed to have freedom in this country. Our true freedom is found in Him. Have a blessed July 4th!
Yes, thankful for true freedom! Happy freedom day, Melissa!
What a beautiful idea! I think I will follow our second president’s advice and spend this 4th in acts of devotion to the God who set me free.
Thanks, Candice, me too! “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, ESV)
“The Day of Deliverance.” I love this phrase, Karen, as it pertains both to our earthly freedom under our Constitution, and the everlasting freedom we have in Jesus. Can’t choose a favorite verse, my friend. They are all wonderful!
Martha, I like the phrase, too! I so appreciate our day of deliverance for independence and in spiritual freedom. Blessed fourth of July to you!
Saved. Sealed. Delivered. Free!
Hallelujah, Susan! Yes!
I love this thought Ms. Karen; “Freedom didn’t stop at the cross!” What a wonderful reminder that each of us carries that redemptive freedom with us; and as Ambassadors for Christ, we should always endeavor to help Christ set others free. Great post ma’am. God’s blessings.
J.D., so grateful freedom started at the cross and rose from the tomb. Because freedom has a name. It’s Jesus. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17, ESV)
We can take for granted our freedom in our country and in Christ at times. I never want to do that. Jesus died for my continual freedom, because it begins at salvation but continues throughout our life. Thank you, Karen, for reminding us Freedom began with Jesus giving His life, and our country’s freedom is because of the many who gave their lives.
Stephanie, freedom in Christ DOES continue throughout our life and spiritual journey. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.” (Romans 6:6-7, NLT)
What a beautiful contrast between our earthly day of deliverance and our spiritual day of deliverance! The “freedom” scriptures you listed are a wonderful reminder of all the blessings Christ has poured out for us through His sacrifice on the cross, followed by His resurrection in full power and authority! Such a gift! We should celebrate with all the joy and exuberance of a fireworks display! I also appreciated how you mentioned we are “Free FOR Holy Living”. I love this quote, “Jesus died to set us free FROM sin, not TO sin.” When we celebrate the many freedoms we have in Christ, this is an important reminder. May we honor Him in our living, not in legalism, but out of a response of gratitude and love. God bless you and your family!
Melissa, I love that quote you shared, too! We have freedom from sin! So we are free to live holy and blameless lives through the power of Jesus living in us and through us. “But now you are free from the power of sin and are slaves of God, and his benefits to you include holiness and everlasting life.” (Romans 6:22, TLB)
What a wonderful collection of verses! I am so grateful for the freedom we have in Christ.
Free indeed!“I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” (Psalm 119:45, NIV)
I am so, so grateful for the freedoms we have in our country to go to church, to share the gospel, to believe in Christ without persecution. I’m glad for my freedom in Christ, for salvation, for being able to commit my life to Jesus at thirteen! I’m so grateful to have the Lord eradicate my sins, to help me to overcome besetting problems, and to have forgiven me totally and completely! We are free when we are in Jesus! Great post, Karen!
Thanks for sharing all the areas you’re thankful for freedom! Glad you’ve been pursuing freedom since 13! “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32, ESV)
You helped me gain a new perspective on Independence where I remember too when my freedom day came accepting the Lord my freshmen year in college. Praise God He frees us from our sin and distress where we are free to live holy lives for Him. Love those Scriptures!
Glad this encouraged you, Valerie. I pray to walk in freedom and holiness, live in freedom in Christ, and strive to maintain my freedom in God by being yoked to Christ and not sin.
I love how you have connected the dots between our nation and our souls. Have you seen the books of John Adams on Amazon Prime? It reveals his faith so well.
Michele, I’m not aware of his books. I’ll have to look at those. Thank you!
Yes!! Abiding in his word is key. “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32, ESV) Thank you, Karen. You are such an encouragement to me.
Agree, Jessica. Abiding = freedom. Otherwise, we have no idea of truth. Happy freedom day!
By His blood we are truly free. Happy 4th of July to you and yours as we celebrate our country’s freedom and our Christian freedom. Thanks for sharing
Thanks, Yvonne. Believing in the power of the blood is our first step toward true freedom.
What a beautifully written letter that Abigail received from her husband. I would like to see the art of letter writing restored. However, I do appreciate the quickness and ease of sending electronic mail too. I enjoyed reading your post and wish you a wonderful Independence Day weekend.
Too bad letter writing seems to be a thing of the past. I still write hard copy letters to family members out of town on occasion. Happy Independence Day!
Freedom in Christ is the best freedom of all.
It sure is, Lauren. True freedom in every way. Happy 4th of July!
Wonderful post, Karen! Thanks so much for showing us the connection between spiritual and political freedom. May our country return to its Biblical roots to find peaceful unity and true freedom in our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Thank you, Karen. And, Amen! I pray our country returns to its biblical roots and finds the only true freedom that frees our soul.
Happy 4th, Karen! My favorite is Romans 8:1,2. This verse brings me comfort every day. And when the enemy tries to discourage me because of my past, I embrace these verses and refuse to give in! Oh, the glorious freedom found in Jesus!
Cathy, yes! How wonderful freedom in Christ brings us out from under condemnation from the past or present. Thanks for sharing friend. Happy freedom day!
Karen, what a great reminder that while we can celebrate earthly dates that signify freedoms won, the most important celebration is when we confessed our faith and became free through Jesus. Now, that is really something to celebrate! Your post is a great reminder that we should remember to celebrate that wonder every moment, of every day!
Anne, we should celebrate our personal day of deliverance spiritually with every breath, breathing in the freedom Christ won for us and exhaling His freedom by living free and telling others.
I love this, Karen! I appreciate all the scriptures you share on this topic. I especially like the analogy you make between our freedom in America and our freedom in Christ. What a beautiful post! 🙂
Thanks so much, Marcie. I celebrate freedom of country and especially freedom in Christ…all year long!
Wow. What an amazing list of freedom verses! God speaks so much about our freedom, yet we often remain bound by sin and the things that occupy our hearts. “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) Amen.
So true, Stephen. We have a choice not to submit to a yoke of slavery (to sin) or to stay yoked to Christ alone.
Thank you for this beautiful collection of Scriptures on freedom. And thank you for sharing the wonderful quote from our 2nd president also. Truly, our Lord has won the deepest freedom for us, for our souls!
“Truly, our Lord has won the deepest freedom for us, for our souls!” Love this line, Bettie! Thanks for your comment.
I’m so grateful for all the freedoms we have in Christ. Two of my favorites are Romans 8 about “no condemnation” and Galatians 5:1.
I love Galatians 5:1, too! I always remember how Francis Chan says “for freedom Christ has set us free” means freedom must be maintained. We have the choice to stay and live as free people.
Karen,
What a great compilation of scriptures declaring our freedom in Christ. I still love John 8: 31-32: “…you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” That scripture really draws a line in the sand as to where our freedom comes from. Awesome post, as always!
Blessings,
Bev xx
Thanks, Bev. That passage in John 8 is one of the greatest freedom verses! Believing in the Truth is one of the first steps toward real freedom. God bless!
Love this collection of “freedom” verses!
Yes, freedom means much more than most people realize!
Ava, sometimes God’s people even minimize our spiritual freedom.
Auto-correct rendered “bio” as books–
There’s a series based on the life of John Adams and it’s based on the bio written by McCullough.
Very good, particularly as it shows his relationship with Abigail.
Okay, Michele. Thanks for clarifying.
Spiritually free in Christ!
Yes and amen.
Where would we be without Jesus …
With you, I am so grateful, Karen …
A thousand Hallelujahs, Linda!
